Art Spotlight: Rehearsing Elegance

REHEARSING ELEGANCE: IN THIS PIECE OF ART, I AM HOLDING COCONUT LEAVES AND CINNAMON STICKS, AND I USE BOTH MATERIALS  IN MY EVERYDAY LIFE FOR COOKING, SKINCARE, AND HEALTH CARE.

While creating this piece, I paid attention to what grows from our land and how the things that grow always sustained me. Coconut oil nourishes my body. Cinnamon gives my food a unique flavor and help support my skin whenever I experience hyperpigmentation.

In our communities, we learn to make beauty from what is near and Rehearsing Elegance reflects that inheritance: how care is practiced daily, how elegance is learned through repetition, and how the land teaches us who we are if we pay attention.

This work is about discovering nature and having a relationship with it, like I have with it right here, knowing that we can feel it, we can use it, we can trust it and we can remember it.
