AS AN INTUITIVE ABSTRACT PAINTER AND COLLAGE ARTIST, I INTERWEAVE ASTROLOGY, SPIRITUAL WELLNESS, AND BLACK FEMINIST THINKING INTO MY ART PRACTICE. Over the last decade, I have explored the fluidity of acrylic paint, meditative pattern-making within mandalas, and finding my expressive voice through abstract painting and charcoal drawings. In my submission “A Farmer in Pink Overalls”, I use an abstract perspective to depict how a forced estrangement from nature has detrimental impacts on the psyche of Black people. I’m inspired by authors like bell hooks who reframe the narrative of the depletion of wellness in Black communities as a social and environmental crisis in response to white supremacy. With this piece, I want to highlight abstract art as a creative source for Black thought and political resistance because abstract art has historically been omitted from conversations around Black self-recovery and ecological justice. In return, I hope viewers are able to sense a reconnection beyond the dissociation they may be experiencing from the self and the land.
